Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 4-Readers are introduced to a group of infants of various skin tones and abilities and given the opportunity to follow them into adulthood in this hopeful message to young people. It's less of a story and more inspiration about all the things they can do and accomplish throughout their lives. The positive statement "You can" is repeated throughout the text and gently buoys readers to be their best selves. The tone is encouraging and reassuring while acknowledging there will be hard times and mistakes will be made. An afterword says that young people were interviewed as to what they felt would be important to include in the text and what they wish they'd known when they were younger. What makes this title really stand out are the diverse and inclusive illustrations, including individuals with limb differences, mobility differences, and other variances in ability. Each person presented has an assigned clothing color that makes it easy to track them from spread to spread as they age. Readers will want to return to the beginning of the book repeatedly to follow the path of each character. This is a possible gift for graduates, from kindergarten to college. VERDICT Every individual can shine; this title is recommended for general purchase.-Heather Webbα(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Inclusive and empowering.

The advice written in this book is all taken from real children. . . .Things as simple as loving a good picture book, being brave and being happy, as well as more complicated ideas such as activism and loss are covered.

What do you get when the author & illustrator ask a group of children the advice they would give others? You get a really amazing book!

You Can follows fourteen young people from infants to young adulthood as they navigate and figure out the world around them. Watch as each individual follows their own path of discovery while also working together through some of life’s challenges and joys.

This is such a sweet book that symbolizes so many wonderful things: community, diversity, inclusiveness, love, and growth. A true love letter to all future children. You are valued, you are important, and you matter!

OK…blown away doesn't even begin to describe the impact of this book. From the get-go, I was drawn in by the beautiful cover art-that just shouts out inclusion and the affirmation, “You Can!” And it is clear from the fantastic illustrations by the incredible Steve Antony, who I learned is color blind and works with a limited color palette because of this that he has discovered a world of bright colors that he can see and they are engaging and unique, just like every child drawn. This book was written in collaboration with young adults (sweetly rendered on the last 2 pages, in a zoom session, with the artist. These young adults offered words of wisdom and encouragement delivered in the most engaging and inspirational way to their younger selves-things that they wish they could have heard as children themselves. This book is highly encouraging and teaches each and everyone of us that we can be brave, beautiful, inventive and strong. I love a good picture book. I use them for all ages and use them in groups of young children, at schools, with families as well as in high schools and senior living facilities, especially with the memory units. These people love the illustrations and the simple text engages them…this book is one that I will share far and wide. It's about self-esteem, loving yourself, and being a good and kind accepting person of all ages and all abilities. 3 Cheers!

This wonderfully affirming and inclusive book follows 14 children as they grow together learning all that they are capable of along the way. I just love how this book so skillfully encourages children to follow their passions, understand their rights and the rights of others, and feel empowered to overcome difficult challenges. With its reassuring nature and detailed illustrations, this is a book that will be revisited often.

5.0 out of 5 stars An extraordinary and joyous picture book featuring inclusion.

There are so many good things to say about this book that it's difficult to know where to start. Before even mentioning the inclusivity aspects of the book, it is so important to say that it is just a wonderful picture book. It has delightful illustrations and a simple, meaningful and insightful text. I love the concept of witnessing the transition of the babies on page one growing and maturing into the adults on the last page. I would have loved this book anyway, but what sets it apart is the way in which it considers inclusivity in its broadest sense and particularly because a team of experts was involved in how that inclusivity should be presented.

My own particular focus is on learning disability because my adult daughter who has a profound learning disability nevertheless loves picture books. She will love this one primarily because of the clear, colourful and dynamic illustrations and although she will not understand the content of the words, she will enjoy the way they sound. I was particularly pleased to read the advice to readers to "love a good picture book whatever your age". My daughter may no longer be a child but this book will be a much loved part of her library (and mine).

I have spent many years trying to track down books for and about people with learning and physical disabilities so that my daughter might see herself reflected in the books that she enjoys. This book epitomises the very best of what I've found. It has empathy, imagination, positivity, energy and fun and has been created with a subtlety and lightness of touch that I have rarely encountered. This book is a welcome addition to our personal library but should also be in every public library, school library and book shop because this is a book with a very important message that is delivered with just a wee touch of magic.
