4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 44 ratings

Super Sloth isn't fast. He can't fly. But he is very, very good at moving slowly and looking just like a greenish bit of tree. When his archenemy Anteater makes off with some prize mangoes, Super Sloth vows to save the day . . . eventually!

From the creator of critically acclaimed
Fergal is Fuming comes Starling's laugh-out-loud tale of one ordinary sloth turned superhero.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Super Sloth to the rescue! Well, eventually, maybe. Super Sloth becomes inspired to be a superhero, and just in time. Evil Anteater has stolen all of the animals' mangoes, and they fear they will starve. There's no way Super Sloth will ever catch up to Anteater on foot, and as our hero finds out rather painfully, sloths can't fly. So how will Super Sloth ever infiltrate Anteater's secret lair, hidden deep in the jungle where even the guards have guards? Turns out sloths are very good at something: climbing trees and blending in. It's up to Super Sloth to turn these skills into a winning strategy as he tracks down Anteater, finds the stolen mangoes, and saves the day. The whimsical cartoonlike animals are appropriately goofy and include appropriate markings (a few sloth facts are appended at the end). The illustrations fill the pages and offer lots of ingenious details that will keep readers entertained. This is a lovely story about an ordinary sloth who uses his own powers to turn into someone extraordinary."―Booklist

"A brown-throated sloth tries on the mantle of superhero. Superheroes―faster than a speeding bullet, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Or, should the superhero happen to be a sloth, able to come to the rescue―eventually. Especially when the sloth is a 'very ordinary' specimen of that slow-moving species. But sloths can dream, too, and after this one discovers a comic book left behind by some hikers, he is inspired to tie on a cape and get ready for action. In the jungle, with its giant ferns, blue tree trunks, and numerous animals, it isn't long before there is a cry for help. An anteater is making off with a toucan's mangoes. Sloth rushes over, but by the time he gets there the anteater is long gone with all the mangoes. 'Oh bother!' moans the sloth. It turns out that the anteater is purloining all the animals' mangoes, so they turn to their superhero friend to come to their aid. Not one to be deterred by a little gum in the superhero works, the sloth turns to its strength: slow motion. To get past all the guards at the anteater's fort, the sloth pretends to be a tree, moving so slowly no one notices his approach. Voilà, the dastardly anteater and his minions are foiled. A two-page spread of sloth facts finishes the book. The blue-caped sloth is a stitch as he inches across the page and plummets from the occasional tree. A sweet salute to talents that come in many guises."―Kirkus Reviews

Robert Starling started doodling characters when he was little, and just kind of kept going, filling paper, sketchbooks and school exercise books along the way. His books have been translated into more than twenty languages, and his debut, Fergal is Fuming!, was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children's Book Award.

This was followed by Super Sloth, Fergal in a Fix and Fergal Meets Fern. He joined forces with Smriti Halls and illustrated The Little Island, which was shortlisted for the Little Rebels Award 2020. In 2020 he also teamed up with Eoin McLaughlin for This Book is Not a Bedtime Story, for which he provided illustrations.

A former teacher, he now enjoys running workshops, talks and writing sessions. When he’s not drawing, he can be found doing daddy duties, trying to bake a sponge that doesn’t look like a pancake, or popping the kettle on.

One day whilst hanging in his tree Sloth see’s something on the floor and goes to investigate. It is a comic book with a caped crusader. Sloth read the comic over and over and decided he wanted to be a superhero.

After finding something to use as a cape, Sloth went in search of animals needing his help and it wasn’t long until he could hear cries of help coming from the forest floor, but will Sloth be any good as a superhero and save the day or will he be too slow to be any help?

Super Sloth is young children’s picture book that is a fun read and contains some fabulous, colourful, and full-page artwork that brightens up the pages. I love that the book is about one of the slowest animals wanting to be a superhero, but you know speed isn’t everything! Sloth is such a loveable character and you can’t help warming to him.

I think children will love this book and find it amusing. How often do they get to read books featuring a sloth? Kids also get to read about some sloth facts at the back of the book. An amazing story and one that is educational too – brilliant!

What a great book. All about understanding we are all super heroes inside and it's there's no need for a cape. Loved it.
