Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 2-4-Watching a thunderstorm roll into town holds a certain frisson of excitement. There's an edge of danger, measured against the joy of the pitter-patter on hot ground. Salas captures the anticipation and joy in a storm, contrasting the exuberance of children dancing in the rain against the darkest, scariest parts of the thunder. MacKay's dreamy illustrations, mostly in effective spreads, allow readers to fall into the world of this weather. The book is a perfect read-aloud; smart word choices make short rhymes ebb and flow with the storm: "Wind blows fiercely, howls and shrieks. The world groans slowly, shivers, creaks." The "zap" and "clap" of it all will hold the attention of very young children, but the delicious adjectives will contribute to everyone's vocabulary. Don't miss the thunder science section at the end-a gift. Salas writes with whimsy even when detailing scientific reactions. VERDICT A lovely, vocabulary-stretching, story-hour gift for a cozy day.-Cat McCarreyα(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. My son fell in love with this book at the library. We got it as a Christmas surprise for him and he was thrilled. I love that book is fun for me to read to him and that it includes awesome science resources at the end of the story for him to grow into. This book helped my son fall in love with weather and because of it he's never been afraid of a thunderstorm.

Thank you!!!!

The rhymes are wonderfully engaging as is the art! The entire book is a treat. The backmatter, written in a kid-friendly yet informative manner, is very helpful in explaining the science behind all three parts of a thunderstorm! I believe this book can be enjoyed by children from pre-school through 3rd grade. For the older students (even up to gr. 5) it can be a mentor text in how to use carefully crafted rhymes to tell a story and to explain several different poetic techniques: onomatopoeia, repetition and spot-on word choice! As a retired elementary teacher (gr. 5 and 3 mainly) and a grandma of a pre-K and 1st grader, this book will find lots of love in our household and with students I visit to share it with! I hope it finds its way into school and other libraries, classrooms and households!

This is a book you won't forget easily! So beautifully unique and creative. The hypnotic rhyming rhythm will hook you right at the very start. You can predict the Boom and you can't look away! What a fun illustration style that feels real and tri-dimensional, you can't help but root for the kids - and the goats - to escape the scary stormy skies above! Great vocabulary to introduce atmospheric elements, electrifying - pun intended - read that kids will love!

With energetic lyrical text and vibrant water-washed illustrations, ZAP! CLAP! BOOM! delivers a joyful romp, with three children, through a thunderstorm. Experience a storm like only a child can, in this concept book that serves as both an ode to thunderstorms and a teaching tool for how a storm system develops. If you know the poetic picture books of author Laura Purdie Salas, you’ll come to this work with high expectations. As usual, Salas does not disappoint! The sense of the oncoming storm is visceral. And then…ZAP! CLAP! BOOM!—the refrain reverberates as you turn the page to encounter a thunderclap. It puts you right into the action, fully engaged. Illustrator Elly MacKay has created a magical hilltop village for this story’s setting, complete with leaping mountain goats. The total package is a magical meteorological adventure!

I loved reading this myself, but I can't imagine how much fun it would be to read to a group of children! The rhyme and meter are poetic perfection, and the drama and suspense of the storm are palpable but never overwhelming. Luscious illustrations add to the story in delightful ways, making this book one that kids will want to go back to again and again, and extensive backmatter adds even more educational value and interest for fact-hungry readers. Highly recommended for both home and classroom libraries!

The anticipation of the thunderstorm provides exciting from the first page! The illustrations are a delight with three children romping along with mountain goats in the beginning, then safely inside as the thunderstorm grows, then back romping on the hillside after the thunderstorm, when "the world now shines." This book is a delight to share with children. It's a wonderful addition to your home library, a book to cozy up with on stormy days.

Written in bouncy welcoming rhyme, this story takes you through a summer storm from the build up of clouds, to the first rain drops, the crescendo of thunder, and the fresh damp earth after.
It removes much of the 'scary' factor usually associated with thunderstorms in children's books.
Sneaky education hidden in the story and in depth back matter for further learning makes this more than just a fun romp.
