This Is the Bear Paperback – January 1, 1994

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 138 ratings

"This is the bear who went to the dump and fell on the pile with a bit of a bump." When Fred the bear accidentally gets whisked away by the trash collector, his faithful owner and dog are close behind. Will they be able to save him? Hayes's energetic rhyming verse cries out to be read aloud, and no child will be able to resist Craig's humorous depiction of the bond between boy, bear, and dog.

This is the perfect book for the beginning reader! The story has cute illustrations, and this inviting story has an easy vocabular with repetitive words! It is a favorite of mine, as an elementary school librarian. It was also a favorite of my beginning readers!

Great little book with a subtle humour and interesting little characters, that appeals to both adults and kids. A great book to read aloud and you can focus the story different ways in different readings - on the naughty dog that throws the bear away and then claims hero status on finding him, on the adrenalin junkie bear who views the whole escapade as an adventurous day out or on the little boy determined to find his beloved bear. The illustrations are simple but lovely. This is sure to be a favourite - be prepared to read this over and over and over again!

Book was smaller than my hand totally disappointed

Ugh! So a dog pushes the bear into the garbage on purpose. Then the boy who owns the bear goes to the dump (BY HIMSELF!) to retrieve his bear taking the dog with him. And it ends with the boy finding his bear and the dog getting a bone?!

This book is filled with secrets, sneaky behavior and kids just going wherever they please with no consequences! To me, this just encourages children to behave in inappropriate habits. Not a "bad dog" nor does the dog apologize to the bear for what happened. Oh no- he gets a bone out of the deal. Maybe h should toss toys in the garbage more often! And the boy traipsing through a dumpyard....No WAY! Not safe at all!

5.0 out of 5 stars A real classic story from my childhood!

This is a truly WONDERFUL story about a bear, a boy (and his dog!), and the adventure that the bear goes on! This is such a fun story with easy rhyming that has you and your child involved straight away, and makes for an exciting and fun story to share together! I have very fond memories of reading this as a child and have just bought it for my own new baby girl, and we are thoroughly enjoying reading the story and enjoying The Bear and his adventures!

5.0 out of 5 stars I love, I love, I love this book.....

...and so do all the children I read it to. I started with my grandchildren, aged 2 and 4 and two years later they still want me to read it. I then started to read it to the children I work with, most of whom come from disadvantaged families, and they love it too. It's the first thing they ask me for when I visit again and they're so reluctant to let me have it back that I've had to order some more copies from Amazon. Their parents often say to me "he/she doesn't like being read to" and I tell them "well, watch this!". After listening to it a couple of times they "read" it themselves - a first step on the road to literacy. And you know what? I still enjoy reading it too!
