About the authors
Fictional worlds can teach us so much about the one we live in. The experiences you bring back from the escape are what give stories their value. That's why you read, and that's why I read – and write.
My author career began with a twisted fairytale retelling about the unknown 8th dwarf which turned into a trilogy of such tales. Over the years I've received book awards and industry recognition for which I'm very grateful. I'm currently working on a business plan for an educational company that uses the fairytale trilogy, TaleSpins, as curriculum to teach things like empathy and anti-bullying.
I've written marketing materials for the merch divisions of Disney, DreamWorks, 20th Century Fox, and Universal, but I gave all that up because I was tired of selling people junk that was just going to end up in a landfill. Before I was a writer, I was a preschool teacher and college professor, two positions I found disconcertingly similar.
I live in Pasadena, CA with my wonderful wife Dani and our ridiculously cool dog Finn. Our twins, Sophie and Max (pictured here in kindergarten) are finishing up their college careers. I couldn’t be more proud and amazed. Even though I've been in California since 1996, all my sports allegiances remain in my native New England.
John was born in Seattle and grew up on Vashon Island, WA. After working as a reactor operator on a US nuclear submarine he returned to Seattle for art school and a series of staff illustration jobs, eventually becoming a character artist for Disney Consumer Products in Los Angeles. He eventually left Disney to freelance and his clients include Warner Bros., Fox, Dreamworks, Mattel, Hanna-Barbera, Visa, even Amazon. He is also an accomplished muralist, having designed several large scale pieces for Hassenfeld Children's Hospital in New York City, and Funko headquarters in Everett and Hollywood, CA.
In 2006 he wrote and illustrated Larry Gets Lost in Seattle, the first of more than 30 Larry Gets Lost titles in an award-winning series with total sales of over 500,000. Larry is loved in schools and libraries across America and beyond.
John is now a toy designer at Funko in Everett, WA where he lives with his beautiful wife and two dogs (neither named Larry).

- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2015These books are great, went to San Francisco and bought this for my twins, and since we live in the midwest we are close to Chicago, these books are cute and tell alot about the landmarks, more than most tourist books we have found actually, so good story, and good info, looking at more of these, not to mention a great way for your child to remember special places.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2019I was happy to give this book to my 4yo nephew for his birthday. I'm his aunt who lives in Chicago, so I hope he will learn some landmarks from the city from the book, and then we can point them out in real life someday when his family comes to visit me. To accompany this gift, I also purchased a model CTA train car for the train line that I take to work. They have all model train cars for every line on the CTA's merch website (which, btw, is a thing that exists). Anyway, this is a cute book. I think he liked it.

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2012We bought this book for my 5-year-old nephew and 3-year-old niece, who will make their first visit to in Chicago just before Christmas (with their parents). Not only will the weather be completely different from what they're used to in Tucson, AZ, but so will the big city feel. We sent it to them hoping that it would help them get excited for their upcoming trip and to help them enjoy the many tourist sites we plan to visit while they're here, and their reaction has been incredible. My brother tells me that he has to read the book to them at least once a day, and they're making lists of what they most want to see when they get here. When my nephew was "Star of the Week" in kindergarten, he even picked "Larry Gets Lost in Chicago" as his favorite book to share with the class!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2014This is just the cutest book, and it is such a neat way to show children what is in a particular city. I sent a copy to my niece and nephew in Montana, so they will get excited to visit me in Chicago. The art style is also very interesting and beautiful. I only had one complaint: When Larry and Pete get separated, one goes north and the other goes south. One visits the Hancock Building while the other is at the Sears/Willis Tower. Geographically, they should have been switched. That's nitpicking, I know, but I couldn't help but notice.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2020If you love the city, check out this book. It has a good story line and is interesting in the way that the author slips the north and south side in the story. Larry travels to quite a few important Chicago destinations and my class loved the story. After we read it to the class, I had to buy a copy for my nephews too. I would absolutely recommend. Especially for anyone from Chicago that wants to share the city with the kids!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2016Being born and raised in Chicago, I couldn't wait for this book to come in. It didn't great job at portraying this beautiful city and I can't wait for my son to get older so I can read him all about the great city his mommy was raised in. I plan to buy the Boston version as that has ties to my husband.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2021bought it for friend’s kids who are moving to west coast. It’s including a lot of Chicago’s famous landmarks. It’s a great book. Hope she will like it.
