"Averill colors her stories with abundant flights of clever fancy… But the nonchalance with which she delivers these makes them as real as her grounding details…Children will find Jenny’s lessons about emotions and behavior helpful and reassuring." —Christina Schwarz, The Atlantic Monthly

"The grace and charm of these little books are not only for children. In wording, illustration, and design they offer to people of all ages a short interview of pure delight." —The Saturday Review

"There is a realness about Jenny, as well as a demure charm, that gives these annals of her doings a distinction lacking in many a more pretentious effort." —The New Yorker

"In Jenny readers meet the perfect friend—an honest, fun-loving, and loyal playfellow and comrade-in-arms. How good to have Jenny back in print.” —Leonard S. Marcus, author of Storied City: A Children’s Book Walking Tour Guide to New York City

Five star story in a zero star package
These are really sweet and charming stories that were first published 80 years ago. The story lines are simplistic compared to today's fare of superheroes and wizards, etc. But the issues addressed are still very relevant -- love from family, shyness, loneliness, and a community of friends. And the illustrations are wonderful. That said, the physical copy of the book that I received, which is clearly new and unused, was bound with the pages upside down in relation to the cover. I see a review from three years ago addressing the same problem, so apparently nothing has been done to remove misprinted books from inventory.

What a great series (there's several others) about cats in NYC in the 1930s. SO many kids books from long ago have stereotypes that can't hold up today, but this is just charming. Great to think about NYC a long time ago from a cat's point of view. So fun!

I first read the Jenny Linsky books when I was a very small child, and loved them so much that when I was allowed to get a kitten of my own, I chose a little black one, just like Jenny Linsky. These books became part of my childhood memories-when the cats were out ,my mother would say they "were at a cat club meeting ".I would imagine them dancing the sailor's hornpipe, one playing the nose flute as accompaniment. The influence of the Jenny Linsky books stayed with me, and because of them, I have always had black cats, and learned how special they are. The stories in "Jenny and the Cat Club"are as enchanting as I remember, the illustrations wonderful.Today the stories might be considered "tame" in comparison with our animated space going super hero fascination, but they still have great power to charm a young child's imaginings, and an old lady's memories.Highly recommended!

My daughter checked this book out of her school library,(in the 1970's) and we started reading it together. She had to return the book before we were finished with it. When she tried to check it out again, it was lost and unavailable. Needless to say, she was sad that we didn't finish reading it. After, nearly 30 yrs of looking (off & on) for this title, I finally found it here.
It's the cutest story about "Jenny" a little cat, that will warm your and your childs heart. It's a well written story that will pull the reader in, to go along with "Jenny" on her many adventures.
I bought this book to give to my (30+yr. old) daughter, after all of these years, but not before, I read it myself. It's a warm little book that's easy and enjoyable, to read

There is a way to write, that is simple, yet not condescending. An economy of words that wraps up emotions, actions and adventures with charm and wit while being appropriate for the young and entertaining even for older readers. Knowing this, it's easy and always exciting to come across a classic book. This book IS a classic and I'd never heard of it until this year. I knew it as soon as I opened it and read the first bit, then watched my 7 year old daughter glow about it. We're a homeschooling family and so we buy a lot of books (our local library is dismal, living in a very rural area) to keep our children reading and interested. The whole New York Times review of books is a treasure trove for us that we're excited to explore. In these times we find that reading for the young has become one poor, grouchy, rude, second rate Scholastic book after another, so we search pretty rigorously for books just like this. Our 7 year old, found these a bit below her reading level, but it doesn't change the fact that she loved to read them, they made a reading experience that she'll remember, that was positive, and that's what it's all about. There are no one star reviews for a reason, buy this book.

My 6 year old niece loves cats and is fascinated by older eras of American history. This book, which chronicles the adventures of a cat named Jenny Linsky has been much loved by her. I didn't read all the stories in the book, but the artwork is very 1930s and 40s style line drawings with minimal coloring like New Yorker cartoons, and the time period is a sort of dreamy backyard world that feels like the 1920s or early 30s just from the manners of speaking etc. Although the story is not similar, it felt to me similar in style to the Pippi Longstocking books.

The writing is whimsical, the characters are charming, and the illustrations are a great conversation starter for a kid who sees mostly animation and computer generated graphics.

I would give this as a gift again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely little stories

I bought this to replace the one I'd had as a child. A rather plain looking hardback with no dust jacket that I acquired under strange circumstances and which disappeared a decade later. I'd not thought about it in almost 3 decades and suddenly I remembered it and had to rack my brain in order to remember enough details to Google up the title... and that brought me here. This book contains five stories not just the one that my original book contained, so that's a bonus... although I'd still like to find my original.

The stories are charming, as are the illustrations. I bought this book mainly for the nostalgia, but I think they'd still enchant a child today as they enchanted me in the 70's.

5.0 out of 5 stars You can really identify with the heroine
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 12, 2014
A classic. I read it when I was 6-7 and the series was just appearing in print. I was having a tough time at school fitting in after a long absence through illness, and I really identified with Jenny's timid but incresingly assertive relationships with her catty friends. Whenever I heard a "cat fight" I stopped being afraid and imagined the cat club getting up to scrapes. I recommend it to parents of children as young as 3-4 to read to their children, and older junior school age children to read for themselves. I have to admit it is anthropomorphic, but there are nice plots which iron out happily. Another reason I love it is that we acquired a kitten who grew up to look just like Jenny!
