Finn's Feather Hardcover – Picture Book, June 12, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
Finn runs to show his mother the feather from Hamish, but she only gives him a big hug. In school, Finn’s teacher responds similarly. Why isn’t anyone as excited as he is? Finn sits quietly, cradling the beautiful, amazing feather. “Why did Hamish give it to you?” asks his friend, Lucas. “Maybe he wanted to say hi?” wonders Finn. “Maybe,” Lucas says, “Hamish wanted you to have fun with it.” Finn’s Feather is a story about resilience and memory—about a child, his brother, and a friend who meets him where he is.

A Choosing Therapy Best Grief Book for Children for 2022
"Inspired by Noble's own experience of loss, and enhanced by Abbott's naive, softly colored double-page-spread illustrations, the gentle story deals with death gracefully by celebrating those who have gone before. It will provide a welcome opportunity for parents to discuss a serious issue with their young children."--Michael Cart, Booklist
"The episode is less about grieving the loss of a loved one than finding positive ways to remember and to regard the deceased."--Kirkus Reviews
"A stunning story of a child's death told through the eyes of the brother. A feather arrives, a gift that nurtures loss, and leads to a day filled with laughter, love and the celebration of life, memory and exploring death in a healing and nurturing way. This book is a gift to those who have known loss and those that seek to understand and support."--Jesica Sweedler DeHart, Wandering Bookseller
"Combined, the art and story create a useful, moving resource for bereaved children and their families."--Publishers Weekly
"If you have a child who has lost someone--I cannot recommend this book more highly."--Rebecca Sparrow, Rebecca Sparrow dot com
★ "...more a celebration of love than sadness over a death."--kyurenka, Youth Services Book Review
"A grieving mother pays tribute to her lost son through an inspiring debut children's story."--Who Magazine
"An imaginative and original story by Rachel Noble that is charmingly illustrated by Zoey Abbott, 'Finn's Feather' is a very highly recommended addition to family, daycare center, preschool, elementary school, and community library picture book collections for children ages 4 to 8."--The Midwest Book Review
"In this delicately insightful story about love, loss and forever, Rachel Noble draws on personal experience to offer a gentle pathway forward for anyone who has lost a beloved child or parent, and the process of grieving; a pathway personal to everyone. ... Easy to read words combined with graceful artwork from Zoey Abbott completes a work which is both significant and poignant and perfect for children struggling to understand the process of death and grieving."--Blue Wolf Reviews
"While Finn's Feather is specifically about the loss of a sibling, the message is applicable to any loss in a child's life. Finn walks outside one day and finds a white feather on his doorstep - he could not be more sure that it's from his deceased brother, Hamish... We see moments of joy, resilience, and enduring memory as Finn and his friend Lucas go on a journey to understand why Hamish sent the feather. And we soon find out that Lucas being willing to meet Finn where he is at in his season of grief, and be in that place with him, is a fantastic way to support someone you care about when they are dealing with loss." --Kristen Souza (Licensed Mental Health Counselor), Choosing Therapy
About the Author
Zoey Abbott is a grown-up, but she still has more questions than answers. She also feels like she knew something important when she was a kid, something that she has forgotten. So Zoey time travels in her mind, digging and scraping and scooping up old sticks and bones. She sometimes puts these in her stories.

About the authors
Rachel is the author of Peas in a Pod, illustrated by Katie Rewse (Amicus Ink, 2022), Marty (Holiday House, 2021) and Finn's Feather (Enchanted Lion, 2018) which are both illustrated by Zoey Abbott. With four children of her own, Rachel fell in love with picture books after spending over 15 years with one of her children (sometimes two) on her knee reading stories at bedtime! She lives in Queensland, Australia with her family, dog Eddie and Cleo the cat.
Zoey Abbott was THAT kid - the one that was afraid of almost everything.
So, it makes sense that Zoey’s characters come up against their biggest fears - and always come out on top - with newfound skills, allies and understanding.
Praise:
"...appealing and accessible protagonists who evoke some of the great friendships of children’s literature. Gentle and effective." ― Kirkus Reviews
"Whether an endorsement for exposure therapy or a reassurance that fears are better handled with a friend over tea, this story has consolation to offer to the easily scared." ―The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
"[A] visually striking allegory about the dismay and jealousy a child may feel over change — and this young protagonist’s triumph gives the tale a sense of dark, unexpected gratification." —Publishers Weekly
★ “A book that will inspire readers to find their own pen pals, a good book, and a new friend.”

- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2018I loved this uplifting, encouraging book! The experience of grief from a child's point of view is shared in a natural way, with an underlying sense of loss and longing, balanced with childlike wonder and delight. Other picture books about grief often rely on metaphors that may be difficult for children to understand, but Finn's Feather is clear and honest, without ever becoming too sad.
The writing is exceptionally strong, and the illustrations are an excellent match. I highly recommend this book for both boys and girls, and not just for those who are grieving.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2018This is a beautiful story about hope, grief, and possibility.
Each of the characters in this story plays an important role: his mom, his teacher, his brother Hamish, but his friend is willing to meet him where he is at in his grief. The friend, just being there, is the most beautiful part of this book to me (although the ending is lovely, too!). A unique and emotionally satisfying picture book!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2018This is such a tender, moving book. I put this book up there with the epic CRY, MY HEART BUT NEVER BREAK. While CRY is about accepting loss and grief, FINN'S FEATHER is about moving on and letting the memory of our loved one enrich our life. Finn's simple and ardent belief that his brother, Hamish, has sent this feather from heaven floods the book with hope and joy, in spite of the sad undertones of the loss that Finn and his mother are dealing with. This is also a book about friendship and helping others, and while it is a perfect book for those dealing with grief, I believe it is an important book for all children to read so that they can understand grief--for when either they experience it or someone nears to them does. FINN'S FEATHER is a true treasure, and home and school libraries would be enriched by it.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2020Wow. Talk about a book that really brings a tough subject down to kid level. So sweet and touching and full of emotions - just like the kids it's meant for. Also the pages are beautiful. Can not recommend highly enough.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2018I purchased Finn's Feather for my 5 and 7 yr olds and have enjoyed sharing it with them. Glorious art, a serious theme, wrapped in love and gentle words. The loss of a sibling or friend must be incomprehensible for any child, but this book opened conversations in our home that I would have been at a loss to carry out without the story. The joy that the feather brings to the child at the centre of the story is hard for him to reconcile with the pain it brings to adults around him. A wonderful and beautiful book. Highly recommended! We loved it so much I have bought an extra copy for our school library.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2018This touching story portrays the unique perspective from a child who has lost their sibling. It shows great insight into the resilience of a child and how deep and abiding the love of family is. The story gently unveils the array of emotions with each passing page, and readers who have experienced loss connect with the deep understanding of honouring a life of significance. The story comforts our hearts and promises us hope, that we can all learn and grow from a loss so deep, a love so deep. This is a beautiful tribute to a life that has been and clearly still remains loved.
As a childhood development professional, I have added this book to my library. I highly recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2018When my husband passed away last month, I received a copy of this book...what a perfect story, not just for young children, but for anyone who has experienced loss!
The illustrations are just beautiful...and the text tells the story of a boy who mourns his lost brother, but finds a way to keep his memory and spirit close. This book is told from the personal experience of the author...and it shows. Written with tenderness and understanding, this is a book that children will relate to and that will help many!
As a former kindergarten teacher, mother and grandmother, I highly recommend this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2019I love when a story hits the nail on the head from the child's perspective. Rachel Noble does a wonderful job at portraying how a child might feel in the loss of a sibling, Their grief, and it's process, being so different to an adults. And Zoey Abbott's illustrations compliment it beautifully.
I love how it highlights the importance of friendship in grief as well. This is a great book for any kids. Even if they are not grieving.
