Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Review
"As magical as The Little Prince; as satisfying as Where the Wild Things Are." ―Kirkus Reviews, starred review, on The Boy and the Blue Moon
"the evocative artwork and cozy wind-down message . . . make this a good choice for bedtime reading" ―Booklist, on The Boy and the Blue Moon
"A magical adventure or a dream―listeners to the tale can decide for themselves. A fun and appealing bedtime choice." ―School Library Journal on The Boy and the Blue Moon
"Crowley’s use of perspective combined with the glossy paper creates a lot of depth, as the light catches the darkest elements and makes them nearly glow. The fanciful, lyrical text and the boy’s shock of yellow hair make the book a bit reminiscent of The Little Prince" ―The Horn Book on The Boy and the Blue Moon

- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2018This book is precious! I am a preschool teacher. After reading this book to the four-year old students in my class, we had an animated discussion with lots of questions and interesting observations. It did not end there! For the last few weeks, the children's newfound interest in the moon and planets has led to a total immersion in learning about the solar system! I have since ordered two other copies of the book, one for a friend who also teaches four-year olds and one for myself to keep at home, shelved under 'My favorite children's books'. I am quite picky about what books are placed there. This book clearly deserves a special place on the shelf of every parent or teacher of young children.
"On the night of the blue moon, amazing things can happen...". From there, the author takes us on a dreamlike adventure of a boy and his cat as they travel under the moonlight through 'bluebells' in the forest, a newly-formed lake of 'very deep, deep blue' and a magical boat which the boy and his cat steer toward the moon. The illustrations are captivating with magnificent shades of blue in the background and sparkling stars all around. As the story proceeds, there is much to discuss with a young child: "Was it really a dream or was it real?; why does the moon sometimes appear blue?; why are there circular shapes on the moon's surface? how can a boy and his cat 'fly' while on the moon?; how and why do they return to earth?; and, why does the boy call the earth a 'blue planet'? The illustrator, Ashley Crowley, is clearly a master at his craft. Beyond his beautiful illustrations, he provides plenty of little hidden treats throughout the book for the more observant and curious child to discover.
I highly recommend this book to any child who has an imagination and a yearning, themselves, to have a wish fulfilled, even if only in a dream.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2018Could you tell the difference between a dream and an otherworldly adventure?
Wow, what a vivid imagination Ms. O’Leary has! I loved discovering all of the marvellous places the main character and his cat visited that night. They saw, did, and heard things that most people will never have the chance to experience for themselves. While I was satisfied by how it ended, I’d sure like to follow these characters again the next time they decide to take a long walk on the night of a blue moon.
I would have liked to see a little more time spent exploring the question of whether the boy was dreaming or if he really had magically travelled around the world and to the moon overnight. His adventures were so creative that they could have been interpreted either way. I certainly didn’t require a firm answer to this question, but it would have been nice to see the main character wonder about it a bit more than he did.
With that being said, I did appreciate the surreal atmosphere of this tale. The boy and his cat’s reactions to all of the astonishing plot twists only made me enjoy them even more. It was so much fun to watch these characters realize that something was out of the ordinary, try to make sense of it, and then decide to enjoy it regardless of why or how it was happening.
I’d recommend The Boy and the Blue Moon to anyone who is in the market for a thought-provoking bedtime story.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2023This book is magical! It is one of our favorite stories to read since picking it at our local store. I had to come to Amazon to write a review!
The words paint a wonderful story of dreams, comfort, adventure, and beauty.
If your child loves beautiful illustrations, and great story telling, this is a great choice.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2018The blue moon sat bright in the deep dark sky, a sky twinkling with stars that seemed to float above the house. The light inside the house “was warm and yellow, but outside it was blue and magical.” Down a winding path a boy and his cat began to walk on that most magical night. What would they find in their journey? Kitty licked his paws, stretched, rolled over, and looked up at the boy. Ah, there was something magical! Bluebells carpeting the forest hillside, a “hundred thousand tiny bells ringing out a song that no one had ever heard before.” Magical.
The world was beautiful, the world was blue under the magical blue moon. The boy and his cat continued to stroll along that winding path, quietly entering the forest. They soon approached a rickety suspension bridge, but “tonight it was different.” The landscape was magical and a lake suddenly appeared”where there’d never been a lake before.” It was bluer than blue under the night sky, a sky with a moon like no other. Ah, there was something sitting at the edge of that lake. What could it be?
It was a little blue dinghy with a lantern to light the way, but on such a magical night they might not need it. Into the boat they went and the boy began to row for “in the middle of the lake was a second moon, shimmering and shining.” Row, row, row your boat. “‘Wish-wish,’ said the waves lapping at the side of the boat.” The little boy and the cat began to wish-wish about traveling to that faraway moon. Wish, wish, wish. If you wish hard enough on a blue moon, will your wishes come true? Would they be able to travel to the moon? Wish, wish, wish ...
This is a beautiful book that will charm readers of all ages. I’m certainly not the intended age group for this picture book, but was mesmerized not only by the story, but also the artwork. The combination was truly magical, a once in a blue moon accomplishment. The combination of Crowley’s use of variety of mediums and the exquisite application of Adobe Photoshop was amazing. O’Leary’s tale was lyrical, sweet and is the stuff dreams are made of. I loved this book and it would be a wonderful bedtime story that will be told time and time again.
