Support young children as they learn the importance of setting physical boundaries.

Being in charge of one’s body is a key foundation of consent.
We Are in Charge of Our Bodies builds children’s social and emotional skills and helps with setting physical boundaries.

The sixth book in the We Say What’s Okay series,
We Are in Charge of Our Bodies follows Jackson and his classmates as they learn the names for their private body parts, that they can say what’s okay for their bodies, and why it’s important to respect others’ bodies. Using the book as a read-aloud, educators and families can model language to help children as they learn how to set and respect physical boundaries. The author, who hosts workshops and trainings on teaching boundaries and consent for families and early childhood educators around the country, offers additional activities in the back of the book.

We Are in Charge of Our Bodies includes an introduction to adult readers about the book’s topic. Digital content features a letter to share with teachers and families and a song from Peaceful Schools with downloadable audio files and sheet music.

We Say What's Okay Series
Centered around a class of preschoolers, this series helps teach young children the social and emotional skills they need to understand the complexities of consent. Each book covers a consent theme, such as how to recognize the physical sensations that emotions create, look for body language cues, ask for and listen to choices, and know that our bodies have value. With believable, everyday situations and diverse characters, children can see themselves and others reflected in each story—and develop a vocabulary to communicate consent and feelings. Every book in the series is accompanied by its own song from Peaceful Schools with downloadable audio files and sheet music.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“As a mother and a pediatrician, I am deeply grateful for this book. Lydia Bowers is an expert in demystifying the human body, personal boundaries, and consent for all ages. This book navigates the space of body positivity, body parts, bodily autonomy, and consent with expert grace, clarity, nuance, and honesty. It is not enough to hope our kids stay safe; these concepts taught at a young age are protective and preventative. It is my hope that this book would be in every space where children live and learn.” -- Heather M. Relyea Ashley, MD, FACP, Pediatrics & Internal Medicine, Birmingham, Alabama

I was so impressed with how this book (and every book in the series) was written. The books outline clear boundaries with kindness and explain them so a preschooler can grasp the concepts. The illustrations are fun and the same characters appear throughout the series which helps children relate. This series focuses on educating children on emotional awareness without shame but somehow also manages to do so without an air of being "preachy" or overly sensitive. My 4 yo loves these stories and refers back to them in real life situations. I'm so glad I bought the whole series and would encourage any family of young children to make them part of your reading routine!

What types of conversations did you have about your body and body boundaries when you were growing up? Maybe you didn’t even have conversations about how to respect your body or keep it safe or how to talk about it. I am so excited to see an increasing number of books written for children that support and encourage these types of conversations. Part of the “We Say What’s Okay” series by @freespiritpublishing “We Are In Charge of Our Bodies” is the perfect starting point for caring adults to talk with the children in their lives about bodily autonomy, consent and safety.

“We Are in Charge of Our Bodies”

Jackson and his classmates love singing “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” with Ms. H at circle time, but when the time comes to name body parts to add to the song and Jackson shouts, “penis!” a silly moment becomes an opportunity for the whole class to learn about the proper names for body parts, about privacy and trusted adults and most importantly that we get to decide whether we want to allow others to touch our bodies.

There is so much to love about this book! I really love that while it is told in a narrative form it is a very direct conversation about bodies. Facilitated by the two supportive and loving educators in the story, children are affirmed that their bodies are not something to be ashamed of, that asking questions is safe and important and that they get to make choices about how how their bodies are touched and by whom. “We Are in Charge of Our Bodies” hits all of the marks - it discusses body differences, appropriate anatomical language, safe and trusted adults and consent - all while managing to keep a fun tone in a social setting that children will be able to relate to.
One of the things I love best about Free Spirit Publishing is that all of their books are rich with additional resources and information for adult educators and caregivers. This information will help hesitant or nervous caregivers feel better prepared to have these conversations. This series also includes a song with each book that adds another delightful and fun element to learning.
