Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 1–3—Eight-year-old triplets Emmy, Clare, and Giselle are planning a surprise to celebrate the day their veterinarian father found them in the woods and made them a family. Their dad has a special "Founding Day" gift, too: a charm for each of them in the shape of a trillium flower petal, found alongside them (and their animal companions) when they were babies. When their little brother Zee tries to help with the surprise and ends up in serious danger, the charms magically combine, giving each girl a superpower. Once Zee is safely rescued, the sisters' newly discovered powers wear off, leaving them and readers with more questions than answers—ostensibly to be explored in future installments. The story is plot driven and, aside from Zee's rescue, largely unresolved. Character development is wanting; with little to make each protagonist distinctive, all three of them feel more or less interchangeable, and secondary characters are flat as well. Much of the dialogue is exclamatory, contributing to the markedly cheerful tone of the writing. In the cover art, the sisters are depicted in varying skin tones, though they are never described in the text; interior illustrations are rendered in grayscale. VERDICT The upbeat tone and mysterious origin story may attract some readers, but this series opener lacks substance. Those with a taste for superpowers or magic are better served by series like Kara West's "Mia Mayhem."—Lauren Strohecker, McKinley Elem. Sch., Elkins Park, PA

Laura has spent her career making compelling stories for children. An educational psychologist, she has been Content Expert and Curriculum Director on over 50 children’s television series. You have probably seen her work on Nick Jr., Disney Junior, Netflix, HBO Max or Universal Kids.

The idea for chapter book series, Trillium Sisters, came to her when she was skiing in the Rockies. Ever since that day, she has wanted to live on a mountain in a treehouse with three magical pets. Instead, she lives in New Jersey with her husband and three children.

When she’s not working, Laura loves to be outside with Charley Brown, her dog. She is thankful for ice cream, Sundays, and her co-author, Elly Kramer, who is like the sister she always wanted.

Fantastic start to a new chapter series that follows three sisters, their little brother Zee, and their veterinarian father on their adventures through Trillville. THEY LIVE IN AN ACTUAL TREE HOUSE, which is where I immediately tried to convince my family to move after I put this book down. I think young readers will love the amazing setting, the girls mini'mal pets, and seeing them connect with their magical abilities. It is a lovely and gentle fantasy story set in the real, modern world. Great bridge book to more complex middle grade fantasy reads. Highly recommend!!

This engaging tale brings young readers into a magical world set in a lush forest. Lucky for us, this is the first in a series of stories about the Trillium Triplets! It's a chapter book with a few illustrations- not too advanced for early elementary students, yet still appropriate and entertaining for more confident readers. My 7 year old and I read it together. She loved the drawings and the imagery woven by the authors. The story itself is well-paced and culminates in an exciting, action-packed surprise! We can't wait to dig into book #2 "Bestie Day" and find out where the sisters go next.

Trillium Sisters, book 1 and 2, are fantastic and engaging. The authors create this enchanting, magical world, where you want to remain as long as possible. While problems occur, the characters work together (helped by their newly discovered magical powers and their magical creatures) to solve them and the overwhelming messages are girl power, kindness, and sisterhood. Loved the family in these books and can't wait to read more about them (and hope more information about their origins will be revealed) and to see what other adventures they encounter! Highly recommend for young readers.

My daughter (6) loved the book! She started it and then was excited to keep reading so she read it pretty quickly. She liked the three sisters and that they each had their own animal. No surprise that I think her favorite part was when the magic came into play. She will be eager to read the next ones in the series...

My nine-year-old enjoyed this story of three sisters and their animal sidekicks working together to harness their magic. Who wouldn’t want to live in a treehouse with a zip line and have magical baby animal pals? So fun.

Trillium Sisters is going to be a hit with the 2nd-4th grade crowd, right alongside of early chapter books like Owl Diaries, Diary of an Ice Princess, and Cutiecorns. Three girls, found 8 years ago by a veterinarian, discover that during emergencies, they have super strength, sight and the power to heal. In this series opener, with their animal friends alongside of them, Emmy, Clare and Giselle must rescue their brother from a raging river. Young readers will love the magic and the way the girls work together to make things happen.
