Magic and mystery abound when a young girl discovers a secret, parallel New York City that may help her find her missing brother in this middle grade fantasy adventure that’s a “thrilling page-turner” (Kirkus Reviews) for fans of Thirteen Witches and James Riley.

Could lessons in magic make everything right again?

Nell Batista has been in trouble one too many times. Now she’s down to her last chance—literally. Join the Last Chance Club or be expelled from school. The kids in the club are an odd group, but when their teacher starts giving lessons in magic, things quickly go completely off the weird scale. Nell doesn’t believe in it at first; after all, she’s a smart city kid, and there has been nothing magical in her life since her brother, River, disappeared three years ago.

But this magic is real—and powerful. As their skills grow, Nell and her new friends discover a parallel New York City called the Nigh. It’s a place as delightful as it is scary, sizzling with magical energy, where statues can talk, magicians ride on giant dogs, and monsters roam Central Park. And it is all controlled by the terrifying Minister, who might hold the key to finding Nell’s missing brother. Just how far will Nell go to find him, and who can she trust in a world topsy turvy with enchantment?

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 4–8—A New York City seventh grader at Bright Futures Academy, Nell Batista faces detention with eighth graders Annika, "Crud," and Tom. Annika has brown hair and green eyes; Crud has dark hair; Tom has yellow hair and blue eyes. They are startled when their detention monitor, Mr. Boot, announces he is there to teach them magic using chopsticks. That day, each of them is permitted to wish for something lost, and Nell chooses her missing brother, River, who disappeared three years ago from Washington Square Park. Nell's life becomes a dizzying mix of magic classes, everyday problems with friends and family, and eventually, a journey to the Nigh—a parallel realm where magical beings dwell. Nell returns to Hither (her world) but suspects her brother River was brought to Nigh and makes another expedition there with her friends. This is a whimsical, ambitious story, built by children's imagination and numerous significant subplots. It is grounded by Nell's first-person storytelling and her love for River. The abundance of plotting is further anchored by the moral decisions each character must make: should Nell cage a magical creature to find her brother? Did Annika use social media to bully a classmate? Universal realistic themes are used as jumping-off points for magical elevators, talking park statues, and other fantastical details that readers will find appealing, and the action ends on a cliffhanger that will leave tweens wanting more. No skin tones are described. VERDICT A domestic fantasy that covers a lot of ground with solid character development, this novel will be enjoyed by many readers.—Caitlin Augusta

"Readers hoping to become enmeshed in conspiracies with links to folklore, mythology, and literature will be in heaven....A thrilling page-turner." --
Kirkus Reviews

"Balancing the tweens’ everyday social pressures with a dangerous quest across the fantastical 19th-century version of New York City that is the Nigh, Potter (the Big Foot and Little Foot series) satisfyingly blends contemporary snark with physical adventures heightened by spell-casting misfires, anxious close calls, and just-scary-enough monsters." --
Publishers Weekly

"[Hither & Nigh is] one of my favorite books of 2022 - and ever. I LOVED it and highly recommend it to anyone who loves unique, surprising stories with strong character development and hopeful, magical stories."

I am a 5th grade teacher, a mom of an 11 year old, and a lover of books. Fantasy is our favorite genre at home.
You will NOT be disappointed with this book! It has everything - intriguing characters, funny words, magic, mystery, familiar landmarks, school stuff…
The story has fabulous twists and turns and an ending we did NOT expect. It is a pleasant take on the magic school concept that is different than any out there.
The very first words out of my kiddo’s mouth when we finished reading it was “is there a sequel?” Good news… there is! Do yourself a favor and just get them both at the same time.

We are halfway through this book and all three of my kids (5, 7 and 9) are thoroughly enjoying it. There’s so much magic, humor and depth. It’s quickly becoming one of our favorite books!

Do you have a reader on your list? GET THIS BOOK! It’s been a while since I’ve read a children’s book and I’ve been missing out. Ellen Potter’s Hither & Nigh is joyful. The lead character, Nell, is relatable and funny, her voice carries you through the adventure. As Nell describes the scenes and her fellow students, you’re right there with her. Though a fantasy, so much of this is firmly rooted in the “real” world, it’s easy to get carried into the magical world.

Ellen Potter’s use of language and her ability to draw images with her words, makes this story vibrant. I see Nell in her apartment, in the cafeteria, in the woods being chased by wondrous and sometimes awful creatures, and as she discovers her new world of magic and creates bonds with her classmates. Her observational skills are acute, poignant and witty: “At lunch the next day I sat at the Leftovers Table, it’s where all the kids who didn’t fit in at the other tables sat. The weirdos, the pathologically shy. We didn’t fit with each other, either, but at least we could eat our lunch in peace.”

Come join Nell and her band of weirdos on this marvelous journey. I can’t wait for the next book to come out!

I read this book with my 9 year old and we were both entertained and on the edge of our seats as we followed along with the adventures of Nell and her friends / frenemies!

Potter’s descriptive imagery will make you feel like can feel the energy of the spells casted as you are transported in between the Hither and Nigh.

With some Harry Potter and Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe vibes, this one has sparked our imaginations and will have us thinking for a long time.

We can’t wait for the sequel!

Potter’s writing is clever, multi-layered, multi-dimensional, with strong characters, placed in a gripping story. I’m an adult and I enjoyed reading “Hither & Nigh. Middle schoolers will love it. I especially liked Crud, a gentle giant. He reminds me of my grandson, Mitchell.

Big hit with my 6th graders!

Ellen Potter has a way of developing characters and settings that pull you in and keep you from wanting to leave. I don't even like fantasy, yet I wanted the cool Nell Batista to untangle her life. So I went with her expecting to suspend my beliefs for a bit, but discovering instead that I believed everything that was happening to her. If there's only one book you read in your classroom, it should be this one.

One of my favorite middle grade books, this fantasy novel grabs your attention with unique world building and a sympathetic and heroic main character who is searching for her missing brother —in another world! I loved everything about this book and can’t wait for the next one!
