- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2024Both of Corinne's books are focused on learning about emotional intelligence, communication, and what to do in emergency situations, which are all very important for kids to learn. They remind me a lot of the way that GOTY was in the early 2000s, particularly in regards to handling the social and family issues children go through with compassion like the Chrissa Maxwell books did. I thoroughly enjoyed both the first and second Corinne books! I also love the inclusion of a craft that could help a child in an emergency situation in the back.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2024Got this for our little cousin and she was obsessed with it. Brand new book, no tears or bend corners. Great book!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2022I'm not the target audience for the book, but I have been a big American Girls fan for many years, so I couldn't resist the chance to read and review the newest story!
The 2022 girl, Corinne Tan, lives in Aspen and is dealing with some modern-day issues. Her mother is getting remarried and she feels caught in between wanting the new family to work out, not wanting her biological father to be upset, and dealing with moving into a new house. One of the things that will be different is that her stepfather is wealthier than Corinne's family and friends, and she is worried that her old friends will treat her differently if she is now seen as one of the rich snobby girls who also reside or visit Aspen. Corinne must also deal with racist comments directed at her and her mom by local residents.
The book touches on a lot of issues, which to me makes sense, because a girl this age would be dealing with multiple issues. I loved the setting of the book and how Corinne's hobbies and goals partially revolve around the ski culture in Aspen. I thought the author dealt with the questions of wealth differences quite well - it can be just as disconcerting for the person who comes into wealth as a person who doesn't. I also thought the racism issues were addressed quite well, particularly in that it showed how some adults don't always know the best way to address those issues either.
Overall, highly recommend this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2022American Girl has continued their brilliance in childhood storytelling through their newest book and Girl of the Year, Corrinne. This book gives the reader so much insight into the personality and thoughts of Corrine, or "Cori" as she is referred to by her younger sister, Gwen. Older siblings will be able to relate so strongly to Corrine's inner thoughts and actions based on her desire to prove responsibility. She is a loving older sister who takes on much more to protect her younger sister through the changes they experience in Colorado. There are several references to Colorado-specific terms and experiences, something that anyone who has lived or visited Colorado frequently will pick up. The images on the page are beautiful and help develop the story beyond just the writing. Younger and older readers will love the journey, as there is something for everyone in this book.
The writings are very relatable but also hold several lessons and open the viewer up to experiences they may have not had or thought of previously. This book is brilliantly written, with several professionals listed in the dedication that helped bring real emotion and inner thought to the Corrine character. By reading this book, I feel compassion but also interest in the character. The fact that I can purchase the companion Corrinne American Girl Doll is an added bonus to this incredible piece of literature. Parents and children alike will adore Corrinne and her stories contained in this book. I would definitely recommend it.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2022This is, like most books meant for teens and tweens these days, both a lesson and a good read.
Corrine's mom is getting re-married and they will be moving into stepdad's home. Corrine is Asian and Arne, her new stepdad is from Sweden. Arne's home is bigger and offers a lot of perks; the girls, Corinne and her sister Gwynn will each have their own bedrooms and their bedrooms are larger than the one that they shared at mom's home.
A lot of the book is based around skiing and skating and winter sports which the girls love. And like most teen girls, Cori as she's known has a best friend in Cassidy, a BFF whom she confides in and trusts, mostly.
Things at home start to feel weird for Cori and she takes some pretty drastic and scary steps to try and resolve them. Of course, the resolution comes after talking about them and letting other people in on what she is feeling.
As expected, ***Spoiler Alert *** ...
everything works out great, everyone is loving and happy, and life lessons are learned.
This is a good book, enjoyable, but it will take you up and down as you empathize with Cori's misunderstood (by herself and others') feelings.
Recommended.
Review of: Corinne (Girl of the Year)
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2022Finally, an Asian American Girl. And a good book to accompany her! The story of Corrine is relatable to some children - how a family blends and changes. Some of the issues are relatable to all children - for example, hoping to be accepted by peers despite what they may keep secret. And this book does tackle some issues of racism - how Corrine struggles with it, and eventually stands up to it.
The end of the book has 2 real-life stories that relate to themes in the book. One is about sisters who ski, and the other is about how the author's daughter trained a puppy.
It's a fun read for children. This is absolutely a nice a complement to the doll, which is pretty cool on her own with the blue highlights in her hair.
