About the author
I have been writing stories since I was a kid. Books have been a part of my life since my mom took me to our local library each week and let me roam around the children’s section, picking out whatever I wanted to read. I loved escaping into stories, and I still can’t believe I get to write them for kids now!
I am on the faculty of The Writing Barn where I teach picture book writing courses including Perfecting the Picture Book, Writing Social Emotional Learning Picture Books, and Write. Submit. Support.
I live near Chicago with my husband and two children.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2024Lisa Katzenberger’s” I CAN DO IT Even If I’m Scared Finding the Brave You” showcases three animal friends as they learn to tackle tough things. This concept book is helpful to children, teens, and adults as we all are tempted to let fear win and take the easier (less rewarding) path. Hannah George’s pictures fit the storyline perfectly, highlighting the characters as individuals and as a group. Through playfully beautiful spot illustrations and full-page spreads, readers see the characters experience a range of emotions. This book will be an important addition to libraries and home collections. It would also be a wonderful gift to share when children and friends face challenges.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2024I love this book. My 4 year old who is on the Autism spectrum has a hard time understanding feelings, both his and others. He struggles with knowing that we can all be scared of things no matter how silly it seems. This wonderful story follows 3 friends as they learn to be brave and face their own scary moments. The illustrations are so colorful and fit perfectly with the easy to follow story. The story shows us Elephant, Gator and Cheetah in their scary moments and how they feel. They learn to be brave by imagining themselves being brave and getting through their fears.
I love the way this story shows us many different emotions and that everyone can feel them. It was the perfect way to start conversations with my son and hel him to better understand. I highly recommend this to any family and to any early childhood classroom to help talk about feelings and social skills.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2024I Can Do It Even If I’m Scared gives great advice on techniques to face fears that are applicable to both kids and adults, in a child friendly way . The cute illustrations of animal characters are bright, beautiful and super engaging. This book would even make a helpful gift for college students, or young adults, transitioning to new phases of life. I will definitely remember the story’s advice when facing my own personal challenges.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2024Fantastic read for those anxious littles for first day of school jitters, trying a new sport etc.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2024Whether it’s singing a solo or trying out for the soccer team, we’ve all felt scared at times. Lisa Katzenberger’s latest SEL picture book affirms these feelings and shares how kids (and grownups) can gently guide themselves through these emotions and find The Brave You. Hannah George’s sweet animal illustrations bring a light and playful touch to this uplifting picture book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2024This fun story has such a great message for young children. Trying new things is hard and it’s important to be brave. I enjoyed all of the different ways to help yourself be brave including breathing and playing pretend. I plan to read this to my son as he gets ready to start kindergarten in the fall! I also found the note from the author in the back of the book helpful.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2024I Can Do It Even if I'm Scared, gives advice on how to handle any struggles your child might have with fear. There are certain times when my Grandson gets anxious about situations and I'm going to share these techniques with his parents. This book gives us some additional tools for raising confident, secure and happy children.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2024This is a great addition to any library. The artwork follows three animals dealing with their fears until they find the BRAVE YOU inside of them. I can see kids adopting these techniques/recalling these journies as they face scary situations themselves. Highly recommend!
