The two siblings are out on a family hike one evening when Sarah spots a cave just off the trail. Taking off into the cave without a thought to anything - or anyone - else, Sarah soon disappears into the darkness. Faced with the choice of leaving Sarah alone while he goes to get their parents or going into the unknown - and potentially very scary - cave after Sarah, John ends up doing just that. When he finally catches up with Sarah at a dead end, the two discover carvings that look like Egyptian hieroglyphics. It's when Sarah traces the eye of Ra, which is then followed by a bright flash of light, that their adventure really begins because when they walk back out of the cave, it's not into the forests of Colorado but the rolling dunes of the Egyptian desert near the ancient city of Saqqara.
This was a fun adventure to read, and I really liked the details of what life at that time would have been like. The way the story was centered around the final weeks of construction of Djoser's temple with the inclusion of individuals that are known to history, as well as other individuals who are not, was also really cool. And I had to laugh at the parallels of John's struggle with his family's impending move to Maryland and Zack's struggling with his family's impending move across the Nile.
Though this was a relatively short novel, the pacing of the story was really good, and I definitely liked how it ended. While I know that there are sequels to this book that follow Sarah and John, I wonder if there will also be books that follow the siblings introduced in the epilogue. I think it would be neat to see what kind of trouble those two get up to as well.
All in all, this is definitely a fun read for kids of all ages and for adults who still feel like kids at heart.

Sarah and Jack are in the midst of preparing to move from Colorado to Maryland. While on a hiking adventure, they discover a cave. Sarah cannot contain her curiosity and she entices her brother to follow her.
They enter a portal that leads them to ancient Egypt where the siblings meet Zach, the son of an architect who is building the pyramids. The threesome will encounter crocodiles, cobras and assorted dangers of the Nile as they try to uncover who is beheading statues and stealing from tombs.
Will this brother and sister find their way back to the cave entrance? How will this adventure change their lives going forward?
This book is well-written with interesting characters and plot lines. Recommended especially for readers in grades three through six.
John and Sarah Tidewell discover a portal to the past in the mountains behind their home in Colorado (or "Call-oh-raw-doe," as the Egyptian boy Zack calls it). Once the brother and sister get accustomed to being in Egypt--as much as they can, being 4,000 years out of sync with their real lives--they make new friends with Zack, whose father is Imhotep, the architect of the pyramid of Saqqara. They learn about Egyptian family life, food, clothing, and customs.
As they help built the pyramid with Zack, they encounter enormous spiders, scorpions, a cobra, and a Nile croc bent on having John for a snack. The story takes an even more dangerous turn when John sees a mysterious hooded stranger in the pyramid.
Should John and Sarah try to return home to the safety and security of their family, or stay and help discover more about this mysterious man, who can possibly reshape the future to the detriment of humanity?
Middle graders will have fun learning about ancient Egypt almost first-hand as well as what friendship can mean when tested. And don't overlook the extras at the end of the book: the provocative Epilogue and Zack's mother's recipe for Egyptian Tilapia Barley Stew.
So prepare for a feast for your senses in this well-written book by Ben Gartner.

It's a story about two kids who travel back in time and distance, from present day America to Ancient Egypt. They befriend the son of a pyramid architect. He introduces the kids to his family and the kids start helping in the construction of the pyramid
The male and female roles are reversed for the kids, which gets tired after a while. The girl bullies the boy as one example
The story ends weakly. The pyramid builder's son comes to present day America. Somehow, if I had brought a pyramid builder's son to present day America, I would have shown him the internet and what the pyramid looks like now
This is definitely aimed toward middle graders, it has a lot of lessons about the importance if family and valueing people not objects or places.
It is not very thrilling with battle scenes and dangerous quests but the book does tell a story with a message
