“Although the fungi are anthropomorphized with cartoon eyes and goofy grins, the research behind the book is real.”―
The Globe & Mail 100 Best Books of 2018

“Gravel turns adventures in mushroom hunting into scintillating reading material.”―
Quill & Quire Best Kids’ Books of 2018

Elise Gravel is back with a whimsical look at one of her family’s most beloved pastimes: mushroom hunting! Combining her love of exploring nature with her talent for anthropomorphizing everything, she takes us on a magical tour of the forest floor and examines a handful of her favorite alien specimens up close. While the beautiful coral mushroom looks like it belongs under the sea, the peculiar
Lactarius indigo may be better suited for outer space. From the fun-to-stomp puffballs to the prince of the stinkers―the stinkhorn mushroom―and the musically inclined chanterelles, Gravel shares her knowledge of this fascinating kingdom by bringing each species to life in full felt-tip-marker glory.

The Governor General Award–winning author Gravel’s first book with Drawn & Quarterly,
If Found . . . Please Return to Elise Gravel, was a Junior Library Guild selection and an instant hit among librarians, parents, and kids alike. Fostering the same spirit of creativity and curiosity, The Mushroom Fan Club promises to inspire kids to look more closely at the world around them and to seek out all of life’s little treasures, stinky or not!

Editorial Reviews

Review

"I’ve always been entranced at the huge variety of mushrooms I see on my walks and this book makes me want to jump up and go look for them...Do NOT miss this book."―Youth Services Book Review

"It’s amazing what a pair of googly eyes and a smile can do...There’s a welcoming simplicity to [Gravel’s] work, but images like that first illustration of the forest also showcase her skill with denser, more immersive visuals."―
The AV Club

"An introduction to mushrooms may sound dull, but Gravel can make anything exciting and weird. Searching for mushrooms is ‘like a treasure hunt that nature organized just for us!’ she enthuses, but it’s really her descriptive take on her subject that will have kids heading for the woods."―The Toronto Star

Outstanding book on mushrooms for kids (and adults)! My four year old sat and listened to the whole book and interacted with the info and illustrations. The book is laid out very well, and the superb illustrations appeal to kids. I also adore the tone of the writing as you feel the enthusiasm the author has for mushrooms, and it is catchy! I look forward to revisiting this book many times as we learn about fungi over the years.

An easy introduction to mushrooms and mushroom hunting. My 4 year old has decided he’s super interested in mushrooms lately, and so we have been reading this book on repeat. The illustrations are adorable, and I love that it makes very clear to kids that they shouldn’t eat random mushrooms they find. It’s an easy read, but one I don’t mind reading 1-2x each night at bedtime.

Great kids book that is very engaging. I bought this for my 7 year old daughter who looked at it and said "Mushrooms are your thing". Then I picked it up and read it to her. She loved it so much she has read it several times over and even insisted taking it to her class at school to be able to read it to them as well! Very cute and I am happy it reignite her interest in the world of fungi!

So i'll start by saying my daughter loves this book, it's one of her favorites. If i say to her "you know what i love?" she finishes the sentence with the opening lines from the book. It's taught her about some mushrooms, facts, and the illustrations are fantastic. I also love the size and finish of the front/back covers, it's extremely durable and easy to throw in our bag. My one change would be to have it not written in first person. I get that it's more journal-esq but would love even more pages of mushrooms. Would be cute to have maybe the last few pages in the book be more journal like with her and her daughters findings. Would love a part 2 with more!!
