Editorial Reviews

Review

"Filled with likable, kooky characters, this mystery is fast paced and funny. Lewis's Uncle Jonathan, a sorcerer, and their neighbor, eccentric Mrs. Zimmerman, a kindly witch, add a magical element that is sure to appeal to fantasy fans. Yet, the normalcy of the younger characters allows readers to relate to the protagonists and root for them the whole way through." —School Library Journal

About the Author

John Bellairs (1938-1991) was an award-winning American author of many gothic mystery novels for children and young adults, including The House with a Clock in Its Walls, which received both the New York Times Outstanding Book of the Year Award and the American Library Association Children's Books of International Interest Award; The Lamp from the Warlock's Tomb, which won the Edgar Award; and The Specter from the Magician's Museum, which won the New York Public Library 'Best Books for the Teen Age' Award. Brad Strickland has written more than eighty-five published books, including entries in the Lewis Barnavelt and Johnny Dixon series, following the death of the original series creator, John Bellairs. He is a Professor Emeritus of English and lives in Georgia with his wife, Barbara.

I was born on October 27, 1947, in New Holland, a mill village about 50 miles north of Atlanta. In 1964, I had the good fortune to become a student in the Georgia Governor's Honors Program, where my love of reading and writing grew deeper.

My very first professional story, "The Third Grave," was bought by ELLERY QUEEN'S MYSTERY MAGAZINE and appeared in that publication in 1966. Then it was over thirty years before I published again.

But eventually I did begin to write for publication. Alone and in collaboration with my wife Barbara, my late friend Thomas E. Fuller, and fantasy artist and writer Joe DeVito, I have now written some 75 published books. I'm also a professor of English at the University of North Georgia in Gainesville, GA--about six miles from where I was born.

It's probably no great secret that I am also Ken McKea, writer of the Jim Dallas series of Florida thrillers. McKea is kind of an alter ego who lets me write stories a little different from a standard Strickland tale.

Barbara and I have two wonderful grown children, Jonathan (married to Rebecca), who is the Jonathan Strickland of FW: THINKING, a weekly Webcast. He is also Senior Writer for howstuffworks.com. Our daughter Amy (married to Tim Sweeney) is the Head Puppeteer for the Puppetry Arts Center in Atlanta.

The nest isn't empty. Barbara and I also have three cats and two dogs, and that's enough to keep us busy.

I have grown up with John Bellairs books. I used many of them for book report, but enjoyed them as thrilling, supernatural mysteries.

This one managed to work in some Hawaiian Mythology as well (one of my personal favorite mythologies, by the way). It was done in an entertaining and suspenseful way. I could hardly put it down.

For a while, I felt like I was a kid again.

I love the character of Lewis and all, but for the most part Johnny is my favorite. And whatever happened to Anthony Monday? I appreciate Strickland's continuing of the characters of Bellairs, but he needs to give the other two guys some book time. I have not read this book, so I cannot comment on it. I'm just trying to say "hey, Brad - Anthony is ready for another book!!!"

    thank you for your time.

This was an odd entry in the Lewis Barnavelt series. It began at a point in time that made no sense then abruptly it shifted to another time and headed in a different direction. There was no clear villain until the very end. The plot was sluggish and aimless, as though Strickland was stalling until an idea presented itself. In this case, a vague haunting of a new friend by a vengeful spirit. Team Barnavelt spent an inordinate number of pages researching the problem, not knowing what or who they were up against. It felt as though Strickland was losing interest in the characters at this point. Even so, it was a quick read with a couple of nice sequences. I liked it, but with grave reservations.

Good escapist fun. It continues to please the Bellairs fans who have grown accustomed to writings from beyond the grave, channelled so sympathetically by Brad Strickland.

Lewis Barnavelt - at last! - faces a scary test, to which, the answer, is compassion! Great read! Read it!
