Sorting Through Spring (Math in Nature) Hardcover – Picture Book, March 12, 2013

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 50 ratings

As young readers journey into the natural world, they will discover that numbers, patterns, shapes — and much more! — can be found by observing everyday plants and animals.

What if animals and plants knew math, just like us? Would flowers bloom in patterns? Would raindrops fall in rhythm? Would birds balance evenly on branches? In
Sorting through Spring, the second title in the Math in Nature series, nature comes to life to help children grasp concepts of patterning, sorting, data management, and probability.

This interactive, poetic, and artful picture book series is a non-intimidating and enticing way to introduce math to kids — they will laugh, use their imaginations, and learn through activities inspired by the books.

Review

Praise for Counting on Fall:
"Barron's cut-paper collages have the crispness of an autumn afternoon, and Flatt smoothly touches on estimation, counting by fives and tens, counting backwards, and other mathematical concepts while maintaining a gentle, whimsical tone."

This series is lovely, covering all the seasons with a learning focus in each.
Age range I'd say is assisted 4 upwards and an older child on their own.

This one the focus is on Spring and on sorting - each page gives you Spring facts and sorting challenges. Very clever to merge them like this and very well done. The whole series is excellent.

This was a great book to share with my grade one math class. The kids loved the different patterns and loved the ideas of patterns in nature. The animals used in the book were of high interest and the animal facts at the end of the book were great to share.

A great way to educate the reluctant learner is to trick them. This may seem underhand, but look closely and so many of the books that kids read are secretly educational, be they teaching to read or exploring emotions. 'Sorting through Spring' is more open with its educational elements, but still manages to fit them into something that feels different from a plain school book.

'Spring' is a series of scenes of different animals teaching you about the season, but there is more. Each section also challenges you a little to try and discover the pattern in the images and think what would come next. This is a great way of recreating the normal square, triangle, square, what comes next type of puzzle, but in a story. You have Lizann Flatt's lovely illustrations to try and work out the answers. The learning does feel a little left field at times and it is probably best for a slightly older child who has started to understand what patterns are, otherwise they may just think that the story has gone array.
