Sorting Through Spring (Math in Nature) Hardcover – Picture Book, March 12, 2013
What if animals and plants knew math, just like us? Would flowers bloom in patterns? Would raindrops fall in rhythm? Would birds balance evenly on branches? In Sorting through Spring, the second title in the Math in Nature series, nature comes to life to help children grasp concepts of patterning, sorting, data management, and probability.
This interactive, poetic, and artful picture book series is a non-intimidating and enticing way to introduce math to kids they will laugh, use their imaginations, and learn through activities inspired by the books.

Review
"Barron's cut-paper collages have the crispness of an autumn afternoon, and Flatt smoothly touches on estimation, counting by fives and tens, counting backwards, and other mathematical concepts while maintaining a gentle, whimsical tone."

About the authors
Lizann was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. She’s the author of over 12 nonfiction books and numerous short stories and poems. Her picture book "Let’s Go! The Story of Getting from There to Here" was named the 2009 TD Grade One Giveaway title, which means the book was given to every grade one child in Canada—nearly 500,000 kids. Her work has appeared in Ladybug, Babybug, and Highlights for Children magazines.
Lizann is a former editor of Canadian children’s magazine Chickadee. She has an Honours English degree. When she’s not writing, Lizann gardens, bakes, works as a part-time library circulation clerk, and photographs the flora and fauna in her backyard. (She’s almost embarrassed to say it but, as the exception that proves the rule, she actually does have beavers in her backyard.)
Ashley Barron is a multimedia artist who is best known for her paper collage work. She is the illustrator of over a dozen children's books, including the Math in Nature Series (Owlkids), Birthdays Around the World and My Forest is Green (Kids Can Press). Ashley's debut book as author/illustrator, Love You Head to Toe (Owlkids), has been charming parents and babies alike since its release in 2019.
Ashley grew up in the Oshawa/Whitby region of southern Ontario with her parents, younger sister and their many pet dogs and rabbits. Ashley's love for books was ignited at an early age thanks to her mother, a preschool teacher, who kept an extensive collection of children's literature in their spare bedroom. Although Ashley was very much an outdoorsy kid, she savored rainy indoor days, which allowed her the freedom to daydream, read and draw pictures to her heart's content.
Ashley's love for art and literature followed her into adulthood. She graduated from the illustration program at Ontario Collage of Art & Design in 2007 and has been working as a freelance illustrator ever since.
Ashley lives in Toronto with her cinematographer partner, Kevin C. W. Wong. Together they share a bright, plant-filled studio with their three cats.

Age range I'd say is assisted 4 upwards and an older child on their own.
This one the focus is on Spring and on sorting - each page gives you Spring facts and sorting challenges. Very clever to merge them like this and very well done. The whole series is excellent.
'Spring' is a series of scenes of different animals teaching you about the season, but there is more. Each section also challenges you a little to try and discover the pattern in the images and think what would come next. This is a great way of recreating the normal square, triangle, square, what comes next type of puzzle, but in a story. You have Lizann Flatt's lovely illustrations to try and work out the answers. The learning does feel a little left field at times and it is probably best for a slightly older child who has started to understand what patterns are, otherwise they may just think that the story has gone array.
