A Family Secret: A Timmi Tobbson Junior (6-8) Children's Detective Adventure Book (Solve-Them-Yourself Mysteries Book for Boys and Girls age 6-8) (cover may vary) Hardcover – November 25, 2020
Purchase options and add-ons
Attention: The new Timmi Tobbson Junior Boxed Set is now available! It contains the first three books of the series in a matching slipcase!
Junior is the Timmi Tobbson "early reader" series for adventurers and sleuths aged 6-8. In this series' first title, a secret message in an ancient book sends Timmi and his friends - including a three-legged frog - on a wild ride to unravel a life-changing mystery and become the Young Explorers.
In typical Timmi Tobbson fashion, each Junior book offers solve-them-yourself picture mysteries, but that's not all. Accompanying the story is additional content aimed at sparking interest in technology, history and science in general.
Mysteries to Solve
Your child is the detective, and it's up to them to find and interpret clues. Each Timmi Tobbson Junior adventure is divided into short chapters that end with a puzzle to be solved. Clues to the mystery are concealed both within the story and in the colorful illustrations, allowing children to combine information from different sources (text and illustrations) and make logical deductions. This hand-on approach trains kids' problem-solving capabilities and adds a certain level of immersion to the reading experience.
Facts for Explorers
After the story is completed, the book dives deeper into some of the themes shown in the story. Want to know more about ancient riddles, sunken treasure, or the role of secret passageways throughout history? The "Facts for Explorers" section investigates the real-life facts behind the purely fictitious elements of Timmi's story. "Facts for Explorers" aims to spark a little bit of interest in topics like technology, history, and science in general, encouraging kids to be more curious in their everyday lives.
Activities and Tips for Adventurers and Detectives
The third section of the book offers creative tips and tricks. How can you build a device that can turn saltwater into drinking water with just household appliances? How can you collect fingerprints with baking soda? How can you develop your own code to write secret messages? These pages motivate kids to experiment, explore, create, and build.
A Story for the Heart - A Challenge to the Mind
Staying true to the Timmi Tobbson brand, this is a story about friendship and about the drive to explore, to inquire, and to second-guess. Kids will enjoy watching as all three main characters show perseverance and courage in reaching their goal, and rely on the strength of true friendship to unravel each mystery.
Gets Kids' Eyes Off Screens
Timmi Tobbson books are designed to also engage today's young video gamers and water their taste for books. Every page is fully illustrated, merging the visual appeal of a graphicnovel with power of a text-based story to spark imagination. About the authors
J. I. Wagner lives with his beloved wife, their new-born super-cute daughter, two impressively big orange cats and one equally impressive mortgage right at the edge of a forest near Frankfurt, Germany.
He holds a Masters degree from Oxford University where he loved being part of the Christ Church College community.
Brooke Vitale began her career as a children's book editor twenty years ago with one goal: create books that children would enjoy reading and that would have a lasting impact on their lives. But it wasn't until she started teaching her own son to read that she realized just how important it was to have the right books. And she realized that the right books weren’t available. That realization led Brooke to learn more about how children actually learn to read. She teamed up with Orton-Gillingham trained literacy specialist Marisa Ware to design a line of beginning readers that children could ACTUALLY read. The result was the Charge into Reading Decodable Book series, now being adopted by school districts around the country.
In addition to the Charge into Reading line, Brooke is also the author of more than 100 traditionally published books including The Magic Is in You, The Mandalorian: A Clan of Two, and Goonies: An Illustrated Classic. All told, Brooke’s books have sold over 500,000 copies and climbing.
When Brooke is not writing books for children, she works as a children's book editor. Over the course of her 15+ years at top New York publishers including Disney and Penguin Young Readers, Brooke Vitale edited thousands of books, including best-selling titles Hide-and-Hug Olaf and Olaf’s Night Before Christmas.
Today, Brooke is a freelance children’s book editor and runs brookevitale.com, a website dedicated to helping aspiring authors navigate the publishing and self-publishing industry. Since beginning her freelance career, Brooke has helped more than 1,000 authors achieve their dream of publishing a book.

I thought it would be great because it was a colorful book, my son asked me to find a chapter book that had color pages. He loves adventures and this book claimed to do that. It did that and more! He is so excited about it, you get challenge questions while reading, loved that. It made me feel like he was really understanding what he was reading. 5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book - highly recommend it
This is an excellent book for grade one students. I read it to my class on a Kindle and they were able to see the pictures and find clues while teaching online. They LOVED solving the mystery and looking for the little picture clues as well. It was very engaging and they loved every minute of it!
